Sony Pictures Classics is getting the ball rolling in 2020. The studo’s Sundance Film Festival acquisitions intake began relatively earlier than usual, acquiring the U.S. rights and a plethora of international rights for the Florian Zeller-directed feature film The Father, according to Deadline.
An adaptation of a stage production developed by Zeller, The Father is piloted by Anthony Hopkins, who was recently nominated as an Oscar finalist for Best Supporting Actor in the Netflix drama The Two Popes alongside Jonathon Pryce. The supporting cast will pair Hopkins up with fellow Oscar winner Olivia Colman, who shockingly won Best Actress for her role in The Favourite, as well as Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams.
The film will make its big premiere on February 27 2020, hence the urgency behind Sony’s acquisition of its rights, putting it ahead of many studios interested in distribution. The Father depicts Hopkins and Colman as a father and daughter duo with considerable differences. One is very mischievous while the other a tender provider, leading to both engaging in a prophecy that boils down to age.
Zeller compiled the script alongside Christopher Hampton. The stage production for The Father catapulted in Paris in 2012 and would eventually earn a Moliere Award before shifting to West End and Broadway.
