In one of the most notable deals of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics has bought the distribution rights for The Diary of a Teenage Girl. The film is an adaptation of a graphic novel by Phoebe Gloekner that follows the life of Minnie (Bel Powley), a teenager working as an artist in 1970s San Francisco.
The move has been one of the most well-received and reviewed at the festival. It stars Kristen Wiig, who was recently announced as part of the Ghostbusters ensemble, Alexander Skarsgard (HBO’s True Blood), and newcomer Bel Powley. Powley plays the central character, Minnie, with Wiig playing her mother who has a new boyfriend (Skarsgard).
Wiig starred in last year’s The Skeleton Twins, in which Sony also had hand. While Wiig has included raucous comedies (Bridesmaids) in her post-Saturday Night Live filmography, she has been gravitating towards more dramatic fare as of late. She’s also starring in the upcoming Welcome to Me.
No wide release plans have been announced for The Diary of a Teenage Girl but we’ll know more in the coming weeks.
