The Tony Award-winning stage production Beautiful: The Carole King Musical has been picked up by Sony Pictures for a feature film adaptation, the studio has announced. The play is a jukebox biopic about King’s early life and the beginning of her successful music career, told through a series of 1960s chart-topper renditions mixed with her own classic songs.
King (born Carole Klein) entered the music business as a teenager. By the time she reached her twenties, she was in a high-profile marriage to Gerry Goffin and had written for some of the biggest acts in rock and roll. When her work began to take its toll on her personal life, King subsequently found her own voice, which led to her becoming one of the most successful soloists of all time.
The show has garnered various industry awards and acclaim, including a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015, as well as Tony Awards for Best Actress (Jessie Mueller) and Best Sound Design. According to Sony executive Michael De Luca:
