With the news this week that director S.J. Clarkson is working on an undetermined female-led superhero movie for Marvel from Sony, now comes more news about another project Sony has in the works, also about a woman character in the Spider-Verse.
This project will follow comic character Jackpot, also known as Sara Ehret, a crime fighting super mom who develops powers of strength after being exposed to a virus that alters her DNA. The title of “Jackpot” later gets handed down to another woman in the comics after Ehret struggles to balance crime fighting with family life. Alana Jobson, who takes over the responsibilities, takes a mutant hormone to match her abilities.
Marc Guggenheim has officially been onboarded as the writer, with no other names attached yet. It has not yet been stated exactly which woman’s storyline the film will follow, if not both. The character makes multiple appearances throughout Spider-Man comics, and gets her own story told in 2016’s Spider-Man: Jackpot, which Guggenheim also wrote.
Guggenheim is familiar with the source material being a comics writer, and also with big budget superhero films. His recent writing credits include Aquaman, Amazing Spider-Man, and Arrow.
This project is reportedly separate from the one announced with Clarkson on board to direct. The leading rumors place that project as following Madame Web, an anti-hero from the Spider-Verse. Upcoming releases from Sony include Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, and now these two projects. The Morbius trailer hints at crossover between that film and Spider-Man: Homecoming, so it is looking likely that Sony is planning to weave all their stories together into a massive Spider-Verse project in the coming years.
