A new documentary focusing on the 2014 Sony Pictures hack is currently in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The documentary will focus on the hacks and leaked information that broke late last year, the conspiracy theories surrounding who was responsible, as well as the impact it had on cyberterrorism in the public consciousness. The movie will be directed by Jehane Noujaim (Control Room) and produced by partner Karim Amer (The Square). The spouses previously worked together on The Square (2013).
The Sony hacks dominated the entertainment news cycle late last year. The most notable stories to come out of the invasion of privacy included executives expressing distaste with a number of the studio’s upcoming movies before they were released, including Annie and the recent Aloha. On a more serious note, several employees’ private information – including social security numbers – were obtained by the hackers.
Many believe the North Korean government was behind the hack as response to the then-upcoming release of the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy The Interview, in which the pair played TV journalists who are recruited by the U.S. Government to assassinate Kim Jong Un. Major theater chains also declined to show the movie after the perpetrators of the hack threatened to commit real-world terrorist attacks at theaters that screened the comedy. President Barack Obama went on record as claiming North Korea was responsible for the attacks, though the country has denied any involvement. A hacker group calling itself Guardians of Peace is the only entity to have claimed responsibility. Many also believe it was an inside job, with perpetrators who could navigate the company’s security systems. The ordeal eventually led to the resignation from the company’s co-chair, Amy Pascal.
Noujaim has experience making documentaries centered on corporate affairs dating back to her first film, 2001’s Startup.com, which followed the rise and fall of the startup company GovWorks.com. Most recently she made the Netflix-exclusive documentary The Square, which followed Egyptian revolutionaries as they fight against leaders and their regimes.
