Sony Pictures has announced an ambitious slate of releases for 2016-2017 and beyond, betting heavily on sequels, reboots and potential new franchises.
Chief among Sony’s announced titles is the sequel Bad Boys 3 (set for a 2/17/17 bow). The original two films starred Will Smith (Suicide Squad) and Martin Lawrence, though there’s been no confirmation that the two will re-up for a new installment. Banking on the potential success of number three, Sony has pegged a 7/3/19 release for yet another sequel, Bad Boys 4.
The Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games)/Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) sci-fi romance Passengers will hit theaters on December 21, 2016, no doubt hoping for some awards season buzz. The Imitation Game‘s Morten Tyldum is attached as director.
The much-anticipated distaff reboot of Ghostbusters has been shifted to July 15, 2016, now going head to head with Fox’s Ice Age 5 and Lionsgate’s romantic Los Angles fable La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
The studio is attempting a remake of its successful 1995 board-game fantasy Jumanji with an eye toward a Christmas Day 2016 debut. The original starred the late Robin Williams.
The first installment in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is set for a 1/13/17 debut. Money Monster, a financial drama which reunites Ocean’s Eleven alums George Clooney (Tomorrowland) and Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and is directed by Jodie Foster, is slated for 4/18/16.
This list of films joins those already announced by Sony including an yet-to-be-titled Spider-Man film (7/28/17), The Equalizer 2 (9/29/17), and Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (11/11/16)
