Sony has slated a new non-franchise crime drama, Where the Crawdads Sing, to release June 24, 2022. The film is an adaptation of Delia Owens’ first novel of the same name and will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, the breakout actress from Hulu‘s acclaimed drama series, Normal People.
The film is set in 1950s North Carolina and follows a young woman named Kya Claek, known by others as the “Marsh Girl.” in a coming-of-age mystery. Beasts of the Southern Wild writer Lucy Alibar is writing the script and Reese Witherspoon is producing. The ensemble cast includes Garrett Dillahunt, David Strathairn, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer Jr., Jayson Warner Smith and more. Olivia Newman, who’s known for her 2018 indie sports drama First Match, is set to direct.
The surprising part about the announcement is that the film is set to release alongside Paramount Picture‘s next Transformers film, which is set to star Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback. It’s not very often that a Sony would release a non-franchise release with lesser-known actors in the middle of blockbuster season, but maybe the company is more confident in the film than we think.
Daisy Edgar-Jones is also set to star opposite Sebastian Stan in Mimi Cave’s upcoming social thriller, Fresh.
