‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Speeds Past Box Office with Biggest Opening for Video Game Adaptation

What many expected to potentially flop nearly a year ago has ended up becoming a massive success thanks to a ton of hard working animators. Sonic the Hedgehog has seen a great debut at the box office opening, making about $57 million dollars domestically. With Presidents’ Day weekend going on, the film is expected to make $68 million dollar for its first four day total gross.

Not only is Sonic the Hedgehog slated to be a profitable success of over $100 million worldwide on its opening weekend, but it also surpassed Detective Pikachus record of the biggest opening for a video game adaptation. Paramount should be very glad with Sonic‘s box office performance and their decision to delay the film to redesign the titular character, as one could only wonder how things would have done financially if the old design was kept while being up against Frozen 2.  Having cost over $90 million dollars to make, things are starting out very well for the Blue Blur’s first big screen appearance and, given positive reception from fans, we should expect it to stick around for a good while. It IS the only major kids film out at the moment.

Elsewhere at the box office, Bird of Prey came in a second place with about $17 million and expected to make $19 million overall for the four day weekend. The film dropped 48% from its previous weekend and it is now at $83.6 million at the worldwide box office. As for the other new releases, The Photograph opened at $12.3 million, Fantasy Island opened at about $7.6 million and Downhill opening at $4.7 million on its opening weekend. All three films performed as expected, considering how they were smaller releases and could not compete against Sonic‘s family friendly appeal. Regardless, this provides an overall satisfying Valentines Day/Presidents Day weekend at the box office, giving one blue hedgehog some well-deserved gold rings.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
