Hungarian-born László Nemes, whose feature film debut Son of Saul landed the Cannes grand jury prize and a Best Foreign Film Oscar this past year, will be directing his second feature film, Sunset, according to Variety. The new project will see Nemes reteaming with Son of Saul alumni Mátyás Erdély (cinematographer), Gábor Sipos and Gábor Rajna (producers) and Paris-based Films Distribution, which handled sales of Son of Saul worldwide and will handle international sales for Sunset as well as co-produce.
Sunset is a coming-of-age drama about a girl’s journey to adulthood in 1910 Budapest prior to the outbreak of World War I, while the cosmopolitan city itself undergoes its own rapid transformations.
Nemes left Cannes a winner last year, and this year returns as part of George Miller’s competition jury along with Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange), Kirsten Dunst (Midnight Special), Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games franchise), Vanessa Paradis (French Women), Valeria Golino (The Very Private Life of Mr. Sim) and documentary producer Katayoon Shahabi (From Iran, A Separation).
Sunset is scheduled to shoot in 2017.
