CNN has confirmed that Nick Reiner, 32, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 68, is being held in jail on suspicion of allegedly murdering the couple. He is currently being held without bail, though earlier accounts reported he was being held on $4 million bail.
On Sunday, December 14, at approximately 3:30 p.m, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the Reiners’ Brentwood home, where they discovered a man and a woman deceased. The couple was later publicly identified as Rob and Michele Reiner. People reported the bodies were found by their daughter, Romy, 27.
Additional reports have since surfaced detailing an argument Nick allegedly had with his father at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party the day prior. Nick has struggled with addiction over the years, a subject he and his father explored in the film Being Charlie.
Rob Reiner was widely known for his prolific filmmaking career. His directorial feature debut, the 1984 mockumentary comedy This is Spinal Tap, holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is credited with laying the groundwork for the modern improvised comedy. His other acclaimed films include Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride and Misery.
Reiner was the son of legendary actor, writer, and director Carl Reiner and Estelle Reiner. He was previously married to the late Penny Marshall before marrying Michele Singer Reiner in 1989.
The double-homicide case is expected to be turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office tomorrow.
