Based on Thomas Cullinan’s 1966 Southern gothic novel, The Beguiled was previously made into a movie back in 1971 by Don Siegel starring Clint Eastwood. Coppola’s version will see Colin Farrell as the lead, with a supporting cast consisting of Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning, as well as many other young talents. This will be Elle Fanning’s second film (after Somewhere) with Coppola and Kirsten Dunst’s third collaboration (following The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette) with the director.
The plot revolves around a Union soldier (Farrell) who is held captive in a girl boarding school on the Confederate side during the Civil War. The soldier begins to seduce the young girls, as well as the female faculty, and gradually creates emotional havoc amongst the school population, turning everyone against each other.
Sofia Coppola, an acclaimed writer/director, In 2003, she received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the her film Lost in Translation, and became the third woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. She has since released feature films Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010), and The Bling Ring (2013).
The Beguiled will be produced by Sofia’s brother Roman Coppola, and his production company American Zoetrope. The film will be distributed by Focus Features in the US and Universal Picture International for international release. For its US release, the film will get a limited release on June 23rd, and a wider release on June 30th.
