Recording artist Ledisi has been casted to play legendary gospel singer Mahalia in biopic, Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story. The film will be focused on Jackson’s career during the late 50s and early 60s, along with her friendship with Martin Luther King Jr. and her role during the Civil Rights Movement.
Along with Ledisi, Stomp the Yard star Columbus Short will take on the big role of Martin Luther King Jr, Janet Hubert from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Walking Dead Wendy Raquel Robinson will be co-starring as well.
Ledisi spoke to Deadline in an exclusive interview stating how excited she was to be taking on the role as the iconic “Queen of Gospel Music.”
While talking about her co-stars, she added how extraordinary it was to watch Columbus Short turn into Martin Luther King. Short also stated that it was a dream come true getting such an incredible role.
“I have dreamed of playing this role for many years. It’s truly a great honor to portray a man that has made such an indelible impact on society and to all of ours lives,” he stated.
Both actors are grateful for Ericka Nicole Malone, the film scriptwriter, for giving them the opportunity and to be amongst “a wonderful cast.”
In addition to being the films scriptwriter, Malone will also be one of the executive producers. She hopes to create a tribute for the late singer and all the accomplishments Jackson achieved as a woman, a civic leader and for the gospel music industry.
