It’s not often that we see a film like The Spine of Night come out of Hollywood, but the hand-rotoscoped horror-fantasy film starring Richard E. Grant, Lucy Lawless, Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel and Joe Manganiello, has been acquired by AMC Network’s horror streaming service Shudder and RLJE Films. The film is Morgan Galen King’s directorial debut and is set to premiere in theaters this year before hitting the streamer in 2022.
“The Spine of Night absolutely shreds,” said Shudder GM Craig Engler to Deadline. “It’s a fantasy horror epic that rides lightning directly into the hearts of genre and cult film fans.”
The film focuses on a group of heroes from different eras and cultures who band together to defeat an ancient dark magic that falls into sinister hands and unleashes ages of suffering onto mankind. The Spine of Night had a successful premiere at SXSW this last year, grabbing the attention of RLJE and Shudder.
“The Spine of Night is like the insane love child of Heavy Metal and Mandy,” said RLJE Films Chief Acquisitions Officer Mark Ward. “The audience response out of SXSW proves this is an instant classic that will be playing on midnight movie screens for years to come.”
