Easily one of the most notable original films to have come out in recent memory is the 2019 all star cast murder mystery from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. Knives Out was a critical and commercial hit, getting 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and making over $300 million dollar worldwide at the box office. With such a huge cultural impact for an original movie, a demand for a sequel is expected and fortunately Johnson and star Daniel Craig are going through with those demands. As Netflix has struck deal with Johnson to create make a franchise of Knives Out.
The deal is approximately around $450 million dollars, making this one of the most expensive streaming deals in recent memory. Netflix has won out the bid between Apple TV and Amazon to produce a Knives Out sequel. The deal seems to be hinting that there will be at least two more films, with Knives Out 2 and 3 being discussed within. Johnson, of course, is expected to return to direct alongside Craig reprising his role as Benoit Blanc. No words on who will join the cast for the sequel, but the film is expected to start production and casting on June 28th in Greece.
One downside to this is that some fans might be a bit disappointed with the fact that Knives Out will be set as a streaming film as opposed to being in theaters. Certainly it is disappointing especially with theaters slowly regaining traction as vaccines roll across the country. Regardless of where it can be viewed, fans should be satisfied to see Benoit Blanc’s comeback in solving another bizarre and unexpected case from the mind of Rian Johnson.
