The short film-dedicated cable and satellite TV channel, ShortsTV, will launch an initiative to support independent theaters impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced all non-essential businesses to close in the past months. Partnered with over 60 indie theaters in the United States and Asia, ShortsTV has created a new virtual cinema release series featuring some of the world’s best short films and will be made accessible by viewers Friday, June 26.
Every two weeks, a feature-length compilation of short films will be made available to audiences on Vimeo OTT. Each partner theater will also have their own page on the platform to distribute locally. Once released, for $7.99, viewers will be able to rent the compilations on-demand for three days.
In a statement, ShortsTV CEO and Founder Carter Pilcher said, “For fifteen years, these independent theaters have been the biggest supporters of the Oscar-nominated Short Films and the nominees who made them. We are grateful for their dedication to our artform which has given these fabulous films a platform and a national audience. We are thrilled to be able to bring together great shorts once again to support independent theaters and their staff during this trying time.”
A compilation of acclaimed, family-friendly animated short films infused with CGI will be the first to release in this virtual series. Called One Small Step, this uplifting collection will feature Oscar nominees such as One Small Step, Gopher Broke and Borrowed Time, and the Oscar-winning Bear Story. Also included are Maestro, After the Rain, The Green Bird, Jubilee, Achoo, Outdoors, Voyagers, O28 and more.
