Shailene Woodley is Done Playing By the Rules in New ‘Divergent’ Trailer

Young adult adaptations are the thing right now.  After the success of the Twilight and Hunger Games franchise, Summit Entertainment is releasing their YA property, Divergent, an adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name.  Now, the latest and final trailer for the film has been released, showcasing more style and a bit more plot.

Divergent takes place in a dystopian Chicago, a century after a war tore the world apart.  In order to maintain a world of peace, people are divided into five factions based on their personality.  The film follows Beatrice, Shailene Woodley, a girl who doesn’t fit into one faction and is labeled Divergent, something the government deems very dangerous.  If the themes seem blunt, that’s because they are, and they are very much on display in this new trailer.

Veronica Roth’s novel received a fair amount of flack for sticking so close to young adult themes and it looks like the adaptation follows suit.  However, once you get past the overbearing ‘don’t put me in a box’ message, the trailer starts to look more interesting.  The trailer showcases some slick production design and visual effects work.  Shailene Woodley’s showed herself to have some pretty impressive acting chops in The Descendants, and director Neil Burger’s Limitless was one of 2011’s biggest surprises.  So while the film’s subject matter might be derivative, it may yet be worth our attention.

Divergent will be released in the U.S. on March 21st.
