Beloved actress Lynn Cohen died Friday morning in New York, confirmed by her manager. She was 86 years old.
The veteran film actress and notable Broadway star was best known for her role as Magda in the popular HBO series Sex and the City, where she was a housekeeper and a nanny for Miranda Hobbs, played by Cynthia Nixon. She appeared in 13 episodes between 2000 and 2004 and reprised her role in the 2008 “Sex and the City” movie and its 2010 sequel.
Cohen’s more recent screen appearances included The Cobbler, Blue Bloods, The Affair, Master of None and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She also frequently appeared in the Law and Order TV franchise. Cohen was no stranger to big screen projects, featuring in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film Munich as Golda Meir and 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as Mags.
Cohen made her Broadway debut in Tennessee Williams’ Orpheus Descending in 1990, directed by Peter Hall and starring Vanessa Redgrave. She was featured in a 1996 Lincoln Center Theater Broadway revival of Chekhov’s Ivanov with Kevin Kline, Jayne Atkinson, Hope Davis and Marian Seldes. Other numerous involvements in theater productions include Hamlet, The Traveling Lady, Total Eclipse, and I Remember Mama, in which she was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award. She won a Richard Seff Award for her role in Tina Howe’s Chasing Manet in 2009, an award presented by Actors Equity to honor character actors 50 years or older.
Cohen was born in 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri. She is survived by her husband Ronald Theodore Cohen, whom she married in June 1964.
