Sony Pictures, still hoping to produce a film adaptation of their hit video game series Uncharted, is in final negotiations with Seth Gordon to direct. Gordon’s previous credits include the comedies Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, with nerd credos shored up by his documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner will produce the adaptation.
The Uncharted series stars Nathan Drake, a fictional descendant of Sir Francis Drake, as he travels around the world searching for ancient artifacts while avoiding rival hunters. As many have commented, the series owes much to the Indiana Jones films. The series has been a huge hit for Sony with three bestselling titles released on the Playstation 3.
The planned film adaptation first caught the attention of fans in 201o with the announcement that David O. Russell, then in between The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, would write and direct. Russell had planned to cast Mark Wahlberg as Drake with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci in supporting roles. The proposed film re-imagined Drake as an art thief and would introduce members of Drake’s immediate family. Fans did not seem to appreciate the new direction Russell had in mind, and he quit in May 2011. It is unknown if Gordon will pick up from where previous director David O. Russell left off in 2011 or if he will start from scratch with a new story, perhaps one that sticks closer to Drake’s hunt for El Dorado in the first game.
