Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani stars in The Big Sick, a romantic dramedy that won audiences over at Sundance earlier this year and scored major deal with growing indie distributor Amazon Studios. Nanjiani also co-wrote the script that follows the self-named Kumail, a Pakistani-American navigating the complex waters of an interracial relationship when his girlfriend Emily (Zoe Kazan) is diagnosed with a mysterious illness that forces their cultural issues into perspective.
The script is based off the real-life courtship of Nanjiani and his co-writer Emily V. Gordon, when the two met after one of his stand up shows and their mistaken one night stand blossomed into a much deeper relationship.
Michael Showalter (Hello My Name is Doris) directed the film which also stars Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as Emily’s parents. The film also features performances from Adeel Akhtar (The Dictator), Anupam Kher (Silver Linings Playbook), as well as comedians Bo Burnham and Aidy Bryant (SNL).
The Big Sick hits theaters on July 14. Check out the trailer below which showcases the heartfelt, charming, and humorous performances from the film’s cast.
