The One and Only Ivan is the latest film set to be released exclusively on Disney+, with a release date of August 14, per Rolling Stone. It stars Bryan Cranston as the caretaker for Sam Rockwell’s Ivan, an artistic gorilla who has spent his entire life living inside of a mall.
With the arrival of a new elephant, Ruby, voiced by Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), Ivan begins to think about his pre-mall life and soon decides to try to find a way out of the mall. The One and Only Ivan also stats Danny DeVito and Helen Mirren as dogs, Chaka Khan as a chicken, and Angelina Jolie, who helped produce the film, as the elder elephant Stella.
The movie was directed by theater director Thea Sharrock. It’s script was written by Mike White (Nacho Libre) and is based off of the beloved 2012 children’s novel of the same name by K.A. Applegate.The original story behind The One and Only Ivan was actually based off of real events.
Cranston’s most recent film was Breaking Bad spin-off, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, while Rockwell’s was in 2019’s Richard Jewell and as a voice actor in 2020’s Trolls World Tour.
This is just the latest in the line of star-studded summer films that Disney+ has been realizing since its inception, and further validates its position as a top international streaming service.
