From filmmaker Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee) comes Maggie’s Plan, a screwball romantic comedy and New York love story starring Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha), Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), and Oscar-winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice).
The story follows Maggie (Gerwig), a young woman who has decided to have a baby on her own when she meets and falls in love with John, a married anthropologist (Hawke) whose wife, Georgette, just so happens to be another brilliant academic (Moore). As the trailer below reveals, the affair soon turns sour and Maggie begins to work with Georgette in order to redirect John’s affection back toward his wife.
The plot line and nature of the story sounds and feels very much like a Woody Allen comedy of errors type of tale. Especially since Miller is a third generation New Yorker and focuses a lot of the romantic attention onto the city itself, the writer-director seems to be entering the film into the New York love story genre. She also intends for the love story to be very cerebral, commenting to Entertainment Weekly,
I thought it was important that you believe that these people are in a world where ideas are sexy and where knowing someone’s mind is the most attractive thing that can happen.
The movie had an atypical festival run, beginning at Toronto last year, moving on to New York and finally appearing at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival last month. Sony Pictures Classics picked the film up directly after its Toronto premiere last September and plans to release the film in theaters on May 20.
