Greta Gerwig is entering awards season this year for the first time as a solo director for her project Lady Bird. There to carry her through the season is twice Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan as the film’s lead actress. The first two images from the film have just been released, courtesy of Indiewire, and tease some of the Catholic rebelliousness the film premise intones.
Lady Bird will follow Ronan as a rebellious teenager growing up in Sacramento and attending a local Catholic high school. Familiarly known as “lady bird”, her character longs to break free of her restraints, both at home and at school, and move to New York. The film is loosely based off of Gerwig’s own upbringing in Sacramento before she became the indie Manhattanite we know and love.
A24 picked up the film for distribution last months and are planning on releasing the film in theaters on November 10 after its premiere at TIFF next month. Ronan was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Atonement and Best Actress for Brooklyn. A moody coming-of-age film could very well be the ticket to get both her and Gerwig in the awards race.
The film also boasts a large supporting case including Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Kathryn Newton (13 Reasons Why), Tracy Letts (The Big Short), Beanie Feldstein (Neighbors 2), Patti Cake$ breakout Danielle Macdonald, and many more.
