The last time audiences saw a Mel Gibson-directed film was in 2006 with Apocalypto. The Oscar-winning Braveheart director is coming back in full force with his latest project, the war epic Hacksaw Ridge. The film stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spiderman), an actor also due for a comeback. Based on the film’s first trailer, it looks as though both Gibson and Garfield chose a perfect story to grab audiences this year.
Based on a true story, Garfield stars as the WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss who, after refusing to kill people in the Battle of Okinawa, was the first ever Conscientious Objector in U.S. history to win the Medal of Honor. The film looks to be returning to some of Braveheart‘s ethos, touching on aspects of war ethics, horrors, patriotism, faith, and romance. The trailer is fully immersive, honing in on the intimate tones of Doss’ individual struggle while also delivering grandiose war scenes in an all-encompassing sensory experience.
The film is a star-studded affair, also featuring performances from Teresa Palmer (The Choice), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Luke Bracey (The Best of Me) and many more. The script was written by Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace along with Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan.
