See Cate Blanchett Take on 13 Characters in the Trailer for ‘Manifesto’

Based on the first trailer for Julian Rosefeldt’s Manifesto, it looks like Cate Blanchett is staking her claim as being one of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood. In the film, the two-time Oscar winner (Blue JasmineThe Aviator) plays 13 distinctly different characters.

Blanchett’s personas tell the audience, in a series of monologues, that “all current art is fake” and that “nothing is original.” Rosefeldt’s film originally began as a 130 minute multi-screen installation in 2015. The exhibition was shot over 12 days before it was shown at the Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. The narrative film has been cut down to 90 minutes and will premiere at Sundance later this month.

The trailer, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, is eery, impactful, and stylized, and will likely be a go-to film this year for the art house crowd. If not for its pointed subject matter, it also looks like a dark horse contender for Blanchett towards next year’s awards season, depending on how the film is received in the coming weeks and if it can pick up steam thereafter.
