As stated by The Hollywood Reporter, Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Gossip Girl) revealed that he is “still purging” playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice during a Tuesday press conference at the Cannes Festival. His role in the film was the reason why he attended the festival months before the 2024 election. Stan was invited back to the festival after his appearance on Fjord, playing a conservative father as the film questions who is guilty of imposing their beliefs: the leftist system or conservative values. The crowd started laughing after Stan was asked how his views of the president had changed after playing the role to which he proceeded to look down and shake his head.
Stan responded to the crowd, “It’s just not a laughing matter, to be honest. It isn’t. I think we’re in a really, really bad place. I really do. When you’re looking at what’s happening, which is the consolidation of the media, censorship, the threats, the supposed lawsuits that seemingly never end, but don’t actually go anywhere, you know, the writing was on the wall.”
“To the point where we were three days before the festival, unsure if the movie was going to play at the festival — and maybe more people are paying attention to the film, and I think we’ll stand the test of time for that — but we went through all of it way before Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. I wish it wasn’t like that.” He added, given that The Apprentice experienced censorship and lawsuits.
On Monday night, Fjord gained a nine and a half minute standing ovation.
A Spanish reporter asked him if he experiences being shunned for his Romanian accent, he stated, “I think you’re talking about discrimination, right, on all levels, which is sort of happening around all of us.”
He continued, “I mean, how are we all dealing with it? I think the only way to do it is just to remain as honest as possible, and to think about your own morals and your own values, and to be the example that you, that you want to see in the world.”
“I’m an actor — whatever — but I’m not on the front lines, I’m not in an operating room, I’m not being shot at. But this is my medium, this is my lane, and all I can do is try to involve myself in movies that bring up conversations and different points of view.” He further expressed his role as an actor and how he grappled with bringing in controversial topics.
