Scream 5 has wrapped shooting as Kevin Williamson, the original scribe and creator of the Woodsboro slasher flicks, took to Twitter to confirm. Also reconfirming the January 14, 2022 and announcing the title of the fifth installment: Scream.
The Twitter announcement focuses heavily on Wes Craven, who directed the every Scream film, but unfortunately passed away four years after the release of Scream 4. Williamson honors the iconic horror director and says Wes “would’ve been so proud of the film that Matt and Tyler are making.”
Directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the horror flick Ready or Not just last year. The film was huge success and catapulted the duo into this pseudo-sequel to the 1996 horror classic. Along with them they brought Ready or Not scribe Guy Busick, who is co-writing this sequel and assumed light reboot of the franchise with Zodiac writer James Vanderbilt.
This is the first Scream film with a new director and the second film in the franchise to not be penned by Williamson, the other is Scream 3, which was written by Ehren Kruger and is regarded as one of the least liked films in the franchise. While Williamson is not writer, he is an Executive Producer on the project, the first time he’s held that title since Scream 2.
The returning cast include Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks. The first three have appeared in all four films of the franchise, while Shelton appeared in the latest 2011 installment. Joining the cast is The Boys star Jack Quaid as, one can assume, the Randy Meeks(Jamie Kennedy) film buff-type role, simply based on Quaid’s typical characters.
The film’s title is rather interesting as the official title is Scream, without a subtitle or number attached. It seems this might be a sequel in the vain of 2018’s Halloween, which ignored almost all of the installments aside from the first. This essentially started new franchise for the Michael Myers horror franchise. It will be interesting to see if Scream follows that trajectory or is more of a sequel to the first four films.
Scream is set for a January 2022 release, which is surprisingly not new for the franchise. While the films are horror flicks, none of the prior films were released in October. The first two were released in December, the third in February, and the latest, coming out nearly a decade ago, came out in April.
It will certainly be intriguing to see where this latest Woodsboro installment takes the franchise and the beloved horror trio.
The film is set for a January 14, 2022 release date.
