Coming off of her SAG-nominated performance in I Smile Back, comedy star Sarah Silverman is continuing her exploration into deeper waters. She has now joined Emma Stone in the tennis drama Battle of the Sexes, costarring Steve Carrell, Andrea Riseborough and Elisabeth Shue. Unexpectedly, Danny Boyle is going to have a producer credit under his company, Decibel Films, so the project is shaping up to have plenty of superb talent on all fronts, not to mention its iconic story.
The project is being helmed by Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, with the script written by Simon Beaufoy. The film will tell the true story of tennis stars Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs during the 1970s. This story became famous after King, only 29 at the time, beat Riggs, 55, who was a former Wimbledon champion. Silverman is attached to play Gladys Heldman, the creator of the World Tennis Magazine. She would also go on to help create a circuit for only women after female players felt like they were not being compensated as much as their male counterparts. Heldman will be a very interesting (and different) character for Silverman, but looking at her diverse background and growing variety, she should make a great addition to the film.
There’s not a official release date since the film is still in pre-production, but with Silverman’s involvement being confirmed, the project should begin to make waves soon. The script is reportedly finished so it should start within the next few months.
