Saoirse Ronan is set to star in The Outrun, the film adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, directed by The Unforgivable director Nora Fingscheidt.
Ronan is a four-time Oscar nominee and will play the role of Rona, a woman fresh out of rehab. After a decade away, she returns to Scotland’s wild Orkney Islands to a sheep farm where she spent her childhood. The film will have the same name as the memoir, and both Fingscheidt and Liptrot have worked together to adapt the book for the screen.
Protagonist Pictures is set to introduce the project to buyers during Berlin’s European Film Market next month.
Liptrot’s memoir is a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller and won the 2016 Wainwright Prize, the 2017 PEN Ackerley Prize, and has been translated into 15 languages, selling more than 110,000 copies in the UK alone.
“It was Amy’s voice that first drew me to The Outrun,” said Ronan in a statement. “Her unusual way of seeing things in a way that perhaps you only can when you’ve been to the darkest place you can go within yourself. I have been waiting to play a part like this — the messiness, hopefulness, dreaminess, authenticity, and humor we want to achieve — I’ve been scared of it, but with Nora, I feel ready.”
Ronan has also starred in Little Women and Lady Bird.
