One of Sam Raimi’s most successful R-rated films has finally gotten a streaming release date. After its late January release, Send Help topped the domestic box office charts for almost a whole week in early February, grossing approximately $64 million with $93 million worldwide, making it the second of Rami’s films to pass $50 million globally. Send Help was also a success in the critical form, being met with positive ratings like a certified fresh score of 93% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with one review reading,
From its sudden bursts of gore to the occasionally gonzo plotting, this is a screenplay which only someone like Raimi could bring to life, and thank goodness he has because Send Help is easily the director’s most purely enjoyable movie in many years. – 4.5/5, Jack Martin, Film Feeder
20th Century Studios has confirmed that Send Help will be available to purchase and stream on digital platforms such as Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home as soon as March 24th. A 4K Ultra HD and DVD release for the film has also been confirmed for April 21st, with special features including behind-the-scenes interviews and footage, deleted scenes, bloopers, and much more. With the movie just coming to digital now, Send Help almost became a streaming exclusive when Sony was the producer because they wanted the film to be “a lower-budget production that bypassed theaters completely.” But Raimi didn’t agree with this vision of his film, so he took his project to 20th Century, which turned out to be the right move in the end.
Send Help is a survival thriller that focuses on the meek employee Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) of a financial management company as she gets trapped on a deserted island with her boss and CEO of the company, Preston (Dylan O’Brien), after the plane they were on crashes. The duo has to learn to survive the ruthless environment around them and each other, with Linda enduring Preston’s ridicule for years before the crash. As society fades further and further away, the roles reverse in a shocking and gory way.
While McAdams and O’Brien are the leads of the film, they are joined by Edyll Ismail, Xavier Samuel, Chris Pang, and Dennis Haysbert. Raimi directed from a script co-written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift; the filmmaker also produced alongside Zainab Azizi. Raimi is best known for his work in the horror sphere, helming projects like the Evil Dead trilogy (1981-1992), Darkman (1990), and Drag Me To Hell (2009). He also directed films such as Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007), Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
Send Help will be released digitally on March 24th.
