‘Saints Row’ Film to Be Directed by F. Gary Gray

Coming off of having recently finished directing Men in Black: International with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, American filmmaker F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious) has recently found his next project. The film will be based on the extremely popular video game series Saints Row.

Saints Row has four major installments, with the most recent being 2013’s Saints Row IV, and have always been pitted against the Grand Theft Auto series. Created by Volition and published by Deep Silver, they follow a gang by the name of the Third Street Saints as they battle for control over the cities of Stilwater and Steelport. It is not clear which games the film will be based off, but there is a large tonal shift in the series. The first two games seem run of the mill with stories of inner city gangs battling for territory, while the latter two take on very comedic and absurd elements. Gary has worked with films containing both comedy and extreme action sequences, meaning it could be a balance of both.

The film will be directed by Gray from a script penned by Greg Russo, who is also writing a reboot of the Mortal Kombat films for Warner Brothers. It is being backed as a co-production from Fenix Studios, Koch Media, and Occupant Entertainment. The original story was reported by Deadline.

Robert Thornson Jr.: My name is Robert and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a B.A. in Film and Media studies with hopes to work in the creative industry. I have always had a passion for storytelling and since youth I've loved film. I grew up loving the movies of directors like Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and many more along with writers such as Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino. One thing I have always done is write about movies and communicate to others information about the "film community" and the industry as well as about the films themselves. I write creatively on a daily basis.
