SAG Awards: The Winners

The winners of the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight. With actors comprising the largest voting block of of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the SAG Awards have traditionally been a reliable predictor of Oscar winners in the acting categories and, to a lesser extent, the best picture winner. (SAG awards a Best Performance by a Cast award rather than a Best Picture recognition, which accounts for some of the discrepancy.) Over the last five years, only three out of the twenty actors who won a SAG Award didn’t go on go grab Oscars as well, and one of those stemmed from the fact that Kate Winslet, nominated in the Supporting Actress category in the 2008 SAG Awards for her work in The Reader was on the ballot in the Best Lead Actress category for the Oscars, where she lost to SAG Lead Actress award winner Meryl Streep (for Doubt). Of the Best Picture Oscar winners in the same span, three also won Best Cast, with the exceptions being 2011, when The Help lost the Oscar to The Artist, and 2009, when The Hurt Locker beat out Inglorious Basterds.
