Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Prom’: Trailer Reveals Broadway Adaptation to Netflix

Netflix has officially released the trailer for Ryan Murphy’s (American Horror Story) upcoming film The Prom. This will be Murphy’s first Netflix movie under his deal with the streamer. The Broadway musical adaptation has star-studded cast including: Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Tracey Ullman, Kevin Chamberlin, Mary Kay Place, Nico Greetham, Logan Riley, Nathaniel J. Potvin, Sofia Deler, and Kerry Washington. The film centers around young Indiana high school student (Jo Ellen Pellman) who is banned from attending prom due to the fact that she wants to bring her girlfriend. To support this young girl, a group of self-absorbed theatre stars go to her small conservative town. The Broadway show was a hit and was nominated for six Tony Awards, including best musical, original score and lead actor and lead actress in a musical.

According to Variety, Murphy states that “There is so much passion and warmth in the movie. I think the reason everyone said ‘Yes’ so quickly was because of the message. The passionate idea at the core of the movie is ‘Everyone should be able to have a place at the table.’ The movie’s theme is fighting intolerance, and I think we were all feeling that in our lives”. The film will launch on Netflix December 11th, 2020.
