Rutger Hauer of ‘Blade Runner’ Fame Passes Away at 75

Anyone who’s seen Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner will certainly remember its iconic ending speech given by the character Roy Batty. The sequence was about him losing all of the memories as he faces death, describing these moments as being “lost in time, like tears in the rain.” The speech worked so well due to actor Rutger Hauer‘s performance of the character, having improvised those words in a moment that changed the monologue for the better. On July 19th 2019, Hauer passed away at the age of 75.

Hauer died due to a short illness while home in the Netherlands. His death was announced to the public on the 24th as his funeral took place. The actor started working in 1969, appearing in various Dutch films and proved incredibly popular in home country. After starring in Katie Tippel, Spetters and various other films, the actor made a huge debut in American cinema with his role as the previously mentioned Roy Batty in Blade Runner.

Since then, Hauer had appeared in various foreign films, TV and small roles in other big films. Amongst these roles include Batman BeginsSin City, and the hit series True Blood where he had made another big impression. One of his final roles actually came earlier this year in the video game Kingdom Hearts 3 as main antagonist Master Xehanort, a role initially played by the late Leonard Nimoy. His final role will be in an upcoming miniseries adaption of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol as the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
