The runtime for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic, The Odyssey, has reportedly been leaked on IMAX and AMC theater websites. While the times have since been removed, fans can anticipate the film clocking in at 2 hours and 53 minutes.
The adaptation is set to hit theaters on July 17, with hype for the film building since mid-2025, with opening weekend 70MM IMAX tickets being released in July of 2025. While it’s a given that credits will take up a fraction of said screen time, the film will only trail behind Nolan’s Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer, which clocked in at exactly 3 hours. Films that are close behind are Interstellar at 2 hours and 49 minutes and The Dark Knight Rises at 2 hours and 45 minutes. With Nolan becoming known for shooting on IMAX film, 3 hours is the limit as Cade Onder of IGN points out,
The platters that physically hold the film reels can not withstand anything beyond 3 hours, and Nolan had to work with IMAX to slightly extend the platters to even allow for Oppenheimer’s runtime.
With multiple trailers now out as the release date approaches, the film has faced some controversy. Most recently, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, set to play Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, has had to respond to racist backlash leveled at her casting in said roles. She has responded, stating, “…You can’t perform beauty…”, but has also shown resistance to harping on the matter because she believes the criticism will exist regardless. Criticism has also been shown towards Nolan, with some people angered over historical inaccuracies in relation to the language, clothing, and armor of the times.
No matter the controversy, it cannot be denied that The Odyssey is one of the most anticipated films of the year, with a real chance to leave a major dent in the summer box office. The film will star Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and more.
The Odyssey will release in premium and regular formats on July 17, 2026. Stay with us at MXDWN for any future updates as we draw closer to the release date.
