It’s been nearly four years since the U.S. version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was released, but in that time, the franchise has gone into hibernation. With the process moving so slowly, most hopes of a sequel had died out until earlier this month reports surfaced of possible reboot. Star of the last film Rooney Mara (Pan), responded to the reports by stating her intention to return to the series.
The star of Todd Haynes’ upcoming Carol, recently talked to E! about the possible reboot to the franchise. Reports initially said that Sony planned on starting the series from scratch, using the new book The Girl in The Spider’s Web, to reboot the franchise. It was speculated that Sony had decided to move in different direction from David Fincher‘s film, which meant departure from original stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
“As far as I know, I’m doing it until someone tells me otherwise. And then I still might do it!” said Mara. It seems she isn’t too keen on abandoning the role that helped launch her career and earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a modest hit but failed to live up to the high expectations of the best selling book series by the late Steig Larsson, who passed away before the publications of his manuscripts. Earlier this year, the book series released its first release since the initial release of the trilogy with the fourth book being written by David Lagercrantz, the first book not written by Larsson – which is the book Sony reportedly wants to use for the reboot.
One possible name that has beeing rumored to replace Mara as Lisbeth Salander is Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl). No casting choices have been made as of yet, and with Mara lobbying to for a return to the role, we hope Sony takes notice. Until then, we’ll keep you updated with any news.
