Despite a movie adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro just 15 years earlier, the DC Comics character Hellboy got the reboot treatment last year, starring David Harbour as the titular role. Del Toro has mentioned several times that he was interested in making the series a trilogy, but a third installment has yet to grace the big screen. Apparently, Ron Perlman wouldn’t say no to a third Hellboy either.
Before Harbour, Perlman was Hellboy’s original screen actor, in both the 2004 movie and its 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Perlman said in an interview with Empire, “If Guillermo were to wake up one day and say, ‘You know what Ron? We need to finish the trilogy,’ which is an idea that is near and dear to me, I’d be there in a heartbeat.”
Perlman went on to say that despite his love for the franchise, he wouldn’t even consider resuming the role without Del Toro’s involvement. “Without him I have no interest in donning the make-up again. And you know, I just turned 70. So I would actually go down in history as being the oldest superhero!” So if you’re hoping for a collaboration with Hellboy 2019’s director, Neil Marshall, it looks like you’ll be disappointed.
When asked if Perlman had seen the new film, he admitted he hadn’t, responding with: “It was none of my business. It would only provoke me into whatever things I didn’t need to add to my list of grievances.”
