‘Chicken Run’ Voice Actress Accuses Films Producers of Ageism

Chicken Run voice actress Julia Sawalha will not be reprising her role in the upcoming sequel because she is “too old,” even though her voice has not changed. Chicken Run is the most successful stop motion animation of all time, so Sawalha was devastated when she found out she would not be returning to the role.

Sawalha has accused the producers of the Chicken Run sequel of ageism, which she posted in an open letter on TwitterIn her letter, Sawalha stated, “The reason they gave is that my voice now sounds ‘too old’ and they want a younger actress to reprise the role. Usually, in these circumstances, an actress would be given the chance to do a voice test in order to determine the suitability of their pitch and tone, I however was not given this opportunity.”

She goes on to state that “I went to great lengths to prove to the production that my voice is nigh on the same as it was in the original film. If they will be using some of the original cast members… let’s be frank, I feel I have been unfairly dismissed.”
