Bids are currently on the table for a studio to take up Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives, based on a screenplay by William Nicholson of Gladiator and Unbroken fame, according to Deadline.
Howard will be taking viewers two years back to the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue efforts, which involved a group teens from the Thailand Wild Boar boys soccer team who followed their coach into a cavern. The team became entrenched 1,000 meters below the surface level due to the aftershock of a monsoon, leading to a daring rescue of the trapped civilians. It wasn’t without casualties though, as one retired Thai Navy SEAL lost his life due to a lack of oxygen.
The Tham Luang cave story was previously the subject of a separate miniseries and a documentary distributed by Netflix and National Geographic respectively. Sources describe Nicholson’s script for Thirteen Lives as an updated Apollo 13, which Howard also directed. Despite being grounded on Earth as opposed to deep space, this project has been described as familiar territory for Howard.
Howard’s Thirteen Lives is starting to become a hot commodity in Hollywood and should be heavily-coveted by an array of major film studios in the coming days. More on this will be announced as it develops.
