‘Roma’ Runs a Limited 70mm Screening in Six U.S. Cities

Roma is now available for streaming on Netflix, though you may want the opportunity to see it on as big screen as possible. The movie’s writer and director, Alfonso Cuarón, commented, “The 70mm print of Roma shows unique details not available on any other version. It is for sure the most organic way to experience Roma.” Showings are to be held in Los Angeles and New York City, two cities where Oscars voters are concentrated. The full list of places and dates is as follows:

  • Los Angeles: The Egyptian – January 10-11
  • San Francisco: The Castro – January 2-5; Alamo Drafthouse – January 12-14
  • Chicago: The Music Box – January 9-13
  • New York: Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn – January 11-17
  • Hartford, CT: Cinestudio – January 23-26
  • Austin: Alamo Drafthouse Ritz – December 26 – January 1

Propelled by Cuarón’s fervor for the film to be shown on big screens and Netflix’s plans to prop up the film as a candidate for Oscars Best Picture and an awards front-runner, Netflix was forced to rent cinemas. Most theaters do not show Netflix movies because Netflix does not constrain their showings to theatrical windows.

The movie was shot using an Alexa65 digital camera with 4k resolution. FotoKem is the only 70mm print lab in the world. They transferred the digital to film and created the 70mm prints.

Critics are exuberantly praising Roma. This month, Roma secured Golden Globe nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Director. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Online named the movie best picture. Roma was featured on the Netflix homepage for every customer worldwide on December 14, the first time an individual title was showcased in such a way. For U.S. and Mexico customers, the homepage remained until December 16.
