Robert Rodiguez fans are once again being forced to wait. Coming on the heels of news that Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is being pushed back an entire year, Open Road Films announced today that Machete Kills, the sequel to 2010’s Machete, has shifted from a Sept. 13 release date to Oct. 4.
The October 4th date was originally reserved for the highly anticipated Sin City sequel. Eight years since the original, the Weinsteins’ Dimension Films has moved the sequel all the way to Aug. 22, 2014. There has been no official word on the cause of the delay, but it can be assumed that the post-production and special effects will be time-consuming since the film was shot entirely on green screens. Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, and Rosario Dawson have come back to reprise their roles, and are joined this time around by Josh Brolin, Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, and Juno Temple.
Machete Kills, on the other hand, is only delayed a month. Its original release date would have pitted the film against the Robert De Niro mob comedy The Family and the sequel to the low-budget horror film Insidious. It is speculated that the Oct. 4 date will prove to be less competitive against the Sandra Bullock and George Clooney space adventure Gravity also opening that day. Gravity is Alfonso Cuaron’s first scripted feature since 2006’s Children of Men.
With a screenplay by Kyle Ward, Machete Kills finds Danny Trejo’s title character being recruited by the president (Charlie Sheen) to stop a drug cartel from using an outer space weapon. The grindhouse flick boasts an all-star cast includes Sophia Vergara, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Antonio Banderas, Vanessa Hudgens and Lady Gaga in her first movie role. Alexa Vega, who previously worked with Rodriguez on the Spy Kids films as an adolescent, also appears.
