Robert Redford Stuns Silently in Chandor’s All Is Lost

Robert Redford in All Is Lost

Director J.C. Chandor presented Cannes with his second directorial feature on Wednesday and went on to receive wide praise for the film. The movie, All Is Lost, stars Robert Redford in a role that proves that even at 76 years old, the Sundance Kid’s still got it. Audiences were reportedly mesmerized by the actor’s performance.

The film presents viewers with an intensified continuation of the pure directorial style Chandor debuted within his first film, Margin Call. All Is Lost features one setting and one character whose name and past remain absent from the film. The audience’s focus is set unfalteringly on Redford’s character and the action that surrounds his struggle at sea after his boat sustains significant damage. The movie begins with Redford’s narration of the character’s farewell note and proceeds to depict the characters slowly regressive struggle to survive.

Like Redford, whose captivating performances have always been able to stand on their own, Chandor presents his viewers with a character that staunchly carries All Is Lost despite the fact that he barely speaks throughout its entirety. The film lists Redford as “Our man” in its ending credits, an appropriate and well-earned title given the fact that Chandor seems to have succeeded in the age-old task of allowing an audience to unconditionally champion a film’s protagonist.
