Robert Downey Jr. to Appear in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Casting for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming just got little more interesting. It appears that Robert Downey Jr. will show up as Iron Man in the latest reboot of the webslinger, to be played by Tom Holland (The Impossible). The announcement, first reported in Variety, comes just as details for the film – which while still at Sony will be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – are starting to take shape.

A few weeks back, speculation over the title arose after Sony acquired a domain name with the word “Homecoming.” This sparked curiosity as Spider-Man comic with that moniker featured appearances from others in the Marvel universe, including Iron Man. Downey Jr. is now officially aboard however no other Avengers teammates have been confirmed for Spider-Man: Homecoming at this time – it’s also unclear the size and scope of Iron Man’s role in the film as plot details have remained heavily guarded at this point.

Currently, Downey Jr. will next appear in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (where Holland makes his screen debut as Spidey) and the two-part Avengers: Infinity Wars; currently the Oscar nominated actor hasn’t confirmed to another standalone Iron Man film.

Alongside Holland, Oscar winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) is confirmed for Spider-Man: Homecoming set to portray Aunt May. Zendaya, Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) have also joined the cast; Michael Keaton (Birdman) is in talks to portray the villain in the film however his casting hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. Jon Watts (Cop Car) directs. Spider-Man: Homecoming is due in theaters on July 7, 2017.
