Rob Reiner Confirms ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Sequel

The cult classic mockumentary This is Spinal Tap is getting a sequel. Rob Reiner, the original film’s director, spoke with Richard Herring on his podcast RHLSTP and confirmed the start of production on the sequel. Reiner also confirmed that all the original band members will be making a return. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are all set to reprise their roles as the iconic British heavy metal band.

The sequel was announced in 2022 at the Cannes Film Festival, but production was halted following the Actor’s Strike. Now, the film is set to resume filming in 2024. The sequel will stay true to the mockumentary style mimicking Martin Scorsese’s film The Last Waltz, which documented the final of The Band.

However, Reiner said he also has new plans and ideas for the sequel, “The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film, and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

Reiner also said in the podcast that Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are set to be featured in the film.

The film has secured its place in the vault of comedy classics, but Reiner spoke about the initial reactions to the film, “When we first previewed it, we previewed it in a theater in Dallas, Texas, and people… they didn’t know what the heck they were looking at.”

A release date has not yet been announced for the film.
