James Cameron Confirms ‘Avatar 3’ In A ‘Hectic Two Years Of Post Production’

After a recent pushback for the release date of Avatar 3, James Cameron has confirmed that the newest trip to Pandora is moving full steam ahead. According to Cameron, fans can expect it by Christmas of 2025.

Appearing on TV New Zealand, Cameron said, “We’re into a very hectic two years of post-production right now, so it’ll be Christmas of ’25.” As Deadline reports, Cameron currently resides in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. He’s been working on the post-production at Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital and has stated he wants to become a full citizen and film his movies in New Zealand.

Cameron, who has seen massive success outside of Avatar with his other works like Titanic, Aliens, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, also said he will spend more time on post-production for Avatar 3 than most directors spend on a whole film.

In late 2022, Cameron told Entertainment Weekly that he shot scenes for Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 at the same time as Avatar: The Way Of Water. He initially did it to avoid taking too long between filming, and risking the child actors that make up the main Sully family aging out.

Coincidentally, filming those scenes congruently helped avoid conflict with the SAG-AFTRA strike earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Cameron revealed some of the story, saying, “Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there’s a culture…specifically around that concept. That’s probably saying too much as we speak.” As with The Way Of Water, fans may not get much more until trailers for the film are released.
