Luke Scott, son of the prestigious producer/director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Exodus: Gods and Kings), is gearing up to make his feature directorial debut with Morgan, starring Kate Mara (Iron Man 2, Transcendence). The movie will be produced by his father’s company, Scott Free Productions.
Morgan is described as a sci-fi thriller that revolves around a risk-management consultant who is summoned to determine the mortal fate of an individual; the individual in question, however, happens to be an artificially intelligent being, potentially raising ethical and philosophical dilemmas. The plot could possibly mimic the themes stirred up in films such as Ridley Scott’s own Prometheus, exploring the origin and definition of humanity as well as the nature of artificial beings. Mara’s role, be it as the consultant or the AI, has not yet been revealed.
The script for Morgan, written by Seth Owen, was given an honored spot on the 2014 Black List, which tracks the most highly rated (but unproduced) screenplays for the given year.
Luke Scott directed the sci-fi short film Loom starring Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar) in 2012 – a project also co-produced by Ridley Scott – which earned him tech-savvy credibility as he explored the boundaries of camera technology with his RED EPIC 3D and REDray laser player prototype. The Scott prodigy also acted as second unit director on his father’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, and regularly directs commercial productions for his father’s commercial studio RSA.
Despite this resume, Luke Scott isn’t the first of the Scott clan to make his mark in contemporary cinema. His half-sister Jordan Scott went behind the camera for the 2009 drama Cracks starring Eva Green (Casino Royale, 300: Rise of an Empire) and Juno Temple (Atonement, Maleficent), and brother Jake Scott took the helm of the 2010 drama Welcome to the Rileys starring James Gandolfini (Killing Them Softly, Zero Dark Thirty) and Kristen Stewart (Snow White and the Huntsman, Still Alice).
This is also not Mara’s first encounter with the Scott clan, having just started production on Ridley’s new sci-fi adventure The Martian (due in November 2015). Actress Anya Taylor-Joy has also signed onto Morgan, best known for her performance in the Sundance horror favorite The Witch (2015).
