Ridley Scott’s Historical Epic ‘The Last Duel’ Drops First Trailer

Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical film The Last Duel dropped its first trailer earlier today. The film is due out later this year.

The preview is more than two minutes long and shows an intense plot. Gloomy filters, scenes of vast lands and castles, and a plethora of grand characters are shown throughout the trailer. Based on a true story, the film centers around a 14th-century knight named Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) who fights to the death with his squire, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), after Carrouges’ wife (Jodie Comer) accuses Le Gris of rape.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the size and scope of the picture are equal to that of Scott’s Oscar-winning masterpiece Gladiator.

The 20th Century Studios movie is based on The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, a book written by Eric Jager. Damon, Ben Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener wrote the screenplay for the film. Affleck will appear in the film as Count Pierre d’Alençon.

The project is also a writing collaboration between Damon and Affleck, their second after their award winning screenplay for Good Will Hunting, which MXDWN reported on back in 2019. Their studio, Pearl Street Films, co-produced the film with Scott Free Productions.

The Last Duel arrives in theaters on October 15. Watch the trailer below!
