Ridley Scott Considers ‘Covenant’ Sequel For Alien Franchise

Director Ridley Scott, renowned for Gladiator and Alien franchises, is considering revisiting Alien: Covenant with a potential sequel. While Scott is confirmed to be developing another film in the Alien franchise, he has hinted at wanting to evolve earlier installments, particularly Prometheus (2012) and Covenant (2017). This year’s installment, Alien: Romulus, featuring Pricilla (2023) star Cailee Spaeny,  became the top-grossing horror film of the year, adding momentum to the franchise’s legacy.

The 2017 film Covenant, despite modest box office returns, ends with a cliffhanger where Michael Fassbender’s android David is left with thousands of cryogenically frozen colonists and alien eggs onboard, which fans, and Scott, have seen as inspiration for the next film.

While the success of Alien: Romulus positions it as a viable option for a continuation, Scott appears more invested in Covenant’s open-ended narrative, which offers a fertile ground for expanding the story of David and the colonists’ journey toward Origae-6. Despite Covenant’s limited success, its storyline leaves intriguing possibilities, and fans have long anticipated a sequel that might materialize.

Scott’s comments hint at an ambition to blend elements from Covenant, Prometheus, and Romulus into a fresh chapter for the series, embracing both familiar themes and new territory. The high stakes surrounding a Covenant sequel could introduce new life to the Alien franchise, with Scott potentially delivering a follow-up that explores the darker facets of human and alien survival.
