Recently, Rian Johnson and Daisy Ridley sat down with author Sariah Wilson, and while her Zoom interview with Ridley talked mostly about Chaos Walking and the current theatrical experience, she was able to break some huge news in her interview with Johnson. The biggest being the state of Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy.

The announcement comes at a pretty random time. Disney typically announces updates to franchises like the MCU or Star Wars during a comic con panel, D23, or an investment fair. However, this untitled trilogy has had little movement since it’s initial announcement in a pre-Last Jedi 2017.
In a post-Last Jedi world, there have been mixed feelings from fans about Rian Johnson’s trilogy. Love, hate, or indifferent about that film, it was a very divisive moment for Star Wars fans. Johnson’s twitter and the internet in general was changed. Though, after the fantastic reviews of Knives Out and Disney still believing in the artist, Johnson’s trilogy looks to still be on.
Wilson was clearly excited to interview Johnson.

While 2020 was the first year since 2015 without a new Star Wars film, the TV series The Mandalorian maintained interest in the long running franchise. Lucasfilm is currently in development of a plethora of Disney+ shows, but also a few films including Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars film(which currently does not have a release date, but will begin production soon) and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron due out in 2023.
It is nice to see that Johnson’s trilogy has not been cancelled, as he is slowly becoming one of the most interesting writer and directors working in Hollywood now. For the full interview be sure to check out Sariah Wilson’s Twitter for updates.
As of now, there is no set production date for Rian Johnson’s untitled trilogy.
