‘Resident Evil’ Makes Itself At Home In Number 1 With 60 Million Opening

Resident Evil made itself at home at the top of the box office with 60 million for its opening weekend, passing expectations. It also ranks now as a franchise best opening among the many adaptations to film the series has attempted. It easily beat its competition, knocking Practical Magic 2 down to second with 12.1 million and a massive gap, exerting its dominance over the September box office. Spider-Man Brand New Day drops down to third in its eighth week with 6.5 million. The Odyssey gets 4.9 million and fourth place with ten weeks under its belt. Rounding out the top five, Coyote vs. Acme with 4.5 million in its fourth week.

Runner from Angel Studios brought in 3.18 million in its second week, dropping down to sixth place. In lucky number seven came the 40th Anniversary Transformers the Movie, the original animated feature from 1985, with 3.1 million added for its second box office run. Daniel and the Fiery Furnace tool eighth place with 3.1 million for its opening weekend beating out other newcomer The Weight with 2.315 million landing in ninth place. Tenth went to Buddy, which dropped down in its fourth week to tenth with 1.92 million.
