The latest feature from renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, Julieta, has received release date of December 21st from Sony Pictures Classics. Originally titled Silencio, the Spanish-language film internationally debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May to positive reviews and was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or.
Written and directed by Almodóvar, the film is based on three short stories from Alice Munro’s 2004 book Runaway. It centers on Julieta, a broken-hearted mother whose daughter has been missing for 12 years when she hears word of her from a casual encounter. Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte star as older and younger versions of Julieta. Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Darío Grandinetti, Michelle Jenner and Rossy de Palma round out the cast.
After Cannes, French newspapers called the film “a beautiful film of very pure sadness” (Le Monde) and “a beautiful and intense film” (Le Croix). Variety wrote “Almodóvar has constructed an extremely unconventional mystery, one in which there is no crime or culprit. Rather, his leading lady is herself a riddle.”
Julieta is the ninth collaboration between Almodóvar and Sony Classics, which previously handled the filmmaker’s I’m So Excited, Bad Education, Volver, Broken Embraces, The Skin I Live In, All About My Mother, Talk to Her and The Flower of My Secret. Sony Classics also announced last week that it has acquired the rest of Almodóvar’s full library of films including Pepi, Luci, Bom, Labyrinth of Passion, Dark Habits, What Have I Done to Deserve This, High Heels and Kika.
